Primary and Secondary Backings For Molded Car Carpets

Colback Nonwovens consistently provide the automotive industry with unrivalled performance in processing and end-product quality.

Molded car carpet backing 1
Excellent Stability

The Colback range for moulding applications includes primary as well as secondary backings. When a moulded car carpet is produced by
drawing in complex geometries at minimal moulding cycles and still needs to have excellent stability under severe climate conditions, there is no better product than Colback.

Secondary Backing

To support complex moulded structures, we have developed a secondary backing which allow maximum deformation while preventing bleed-through of polymer resin. Our range includes lightweight secondary backings specifically designed for excellent adhesion to different types of heavy layers.

Molding

Primary backing for molded car carpeting

Backings for tufting are crucial in the production of complex shapes by means of deep draw molding at minimum cycle time to manufacture carpet with long-term stability. Spunlaid Colback nonwovens are the preferred choice of manufacturers serving a wide range of light and heavy vehicle platforms.

Among the reasons for their preference for Colback is how well it behaves during processing and how it performs in the finished product. Depending on the desired deformation and molding temperature, the optimum primary backing can be selected from two product ranges: Colback PET/PA and Colback PET/PP.

PET/PA range

Colback PET/PA primary backings are made of thermally bonded filaments consisting of a polyester core and polyamide sheath. Time and time again they have been proven to meet the stringent demands of automotive flooring systems with medium to deep draws. Colback PET PA/PP are also preferred in case your molding process requires a high temperature.

  • Provides process stability during tufting, dyeing and pre-coating
  • Allows predictable and efficient molding
  • Excellent adhesion with a variety of coating systems resulting in outstanding anchoring of the pile
  • High dimensional stability of the finished carpet: ensures optimum fit in the car interior

PET/PP range

The thermally bonded filaments of Colback PET/PP primary backings are composed of a polyester core and a polypropylene sheath. This filament design makes the nonwoven ideal for use in carpets which are to be exposed to extreme deformations.

  • Deep drawing at lower molding temperatures: minimizes cycle times
  • Can be stretched prior to molding: Allows a reduction in weight and material consumption while still meeting the highest quality standards

Secondary Backing for Molded Car Carpets

Suitable for application in the industry’s deepest molds, Colback nonwoven secondary backings are enjoying growing popularity among producers of molded car carpet. Thanks to its high elongation and tensile strength, the fabric facilitates maximum deformation.

Nonwovens which form part of this product category not only provide excellent reinforcement and rigidity, but they also reliably improve mold release by preventing polymer bleed-through. Colback Flexa has been designed to ensure excellent adhesion to a wide range of heavy layers for tufted car carpeting.
Its uniquely durable and open structure ensures that Colback Flexa maintains its natural permeability to air during most coating and molding processes. It thus facilitates the manufacture of lightweight full floor systems providing superior noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance – a major advantage in today’s automotive industry, which is increasingly striving for weight reductions to cut CO2 emissions and increase mileage. This is relevant for petrol vehicles and even more for electrically-powered vehicles where the lack of engine sound makes the other driving noises more noticeable.
